A Comparative Analysis of Proxy- and Self-Reported Child Health: Case of Korea Welfare Panel Study
Lee Yong-Woo

Abstract
In the survey data, information on household and household members are usually collected through proxy reports. With no exception to health survey, empirical research have investigated the extent of agreement between proxy- and self-reported health and the determinants of proxy- and self-reported health. However, research on the topic hardly exists in Korea. This work attempts to fill the gap with a special focus on child health, using the Korea Welfare Panel Study. Polychoric correlation coefficient and Cohen¡¯ kappa show the fairly low degree of correlation between proxy- and self-reported child health. Further, the factors that determine proxy- and self-reported child health are clearly different from each other, judging from the ordered probit and probit regression analyses. From this observation, we propose to collect both proxy- and self-reported health, at least for adolescents since two measurements are likely to be complements rather than substitutes.
